60 SECOND OVERVIEW OF THE BOOK OF RUTH

As I arrive in Salisbury it is heaving it down! I mean South Florida “there is a hurricane a ‘comin” bucketing it down. In the black and grumbling cumulus covered vale of this Sunday afternoon, the tall tower of the Cathedral reaches its fist into the bending clouds. (Sounds quiet poetic that! The Sandwiches are obviously doing me good)

I am booked into preach at the West Wall at 3:30. I am an hour early. I go to the main gate and explain to the security guard that I need to drive in and unload my PA and that he should have got the email. “No one tells me anything mate.” I flash my Revered Card. I’m in. This card has magic qualities.

I slowly drive to the West Wall and the sun is trying to break through. It feels like a November day. It is windy and very blustery. The kind of blustery wind that is spiritually disconcerting, troubling, unsettling. The wind that is a peace robber. I have had far too much coffee.

I stand back and take a picture of my car. The Car is like an ant beneath the west wall. I am like the toe nail of an ant. If you peer at the picture on the left, you just might see my car. Adjacent to it is the arch way I am due to speak from.

I go inside. They are expecting me. I introduce myself to the verger. He is bald but he is a nice bloke. I have a favour to ask him. “Look its blowing a gale out there mate, may I have the option of speaking in the Cloister? It’s dry, its not inside the Cathedral and people will be more inclined to listen”
He is going to make a call.
I wait
He cannot contact who he needs to speak to.
I all over in the utter surprise that he cannot contact a member of the clergy. Yeah right.
He makes a command decision. He says yes I can. The choice is mine.

He is a good guy.

So now I have a choice. I am undecided, I have prayed. I keep praying,

I get my chalk board.

I set up outside. I walk around. People are rushing past to get out of the wind. This is not going to work.

I set up inside. People are rushing in and then zooming off through the glass doors to get out of the cold. This isn’t going to work.

I set up outside. I walk around. I get the PA out. I make an announcement that I will speak in 5 minutes. A group of Chinese people two hundred yards away turn around. Everyone else walks on, pushing their neck into their collar. It feels like November. This is not going to work. I put the PA away and go back inside.

I set up inside. It does not feel right. everyone seems to have gone home.

I set up outside without the PA system. The sun is out and no one is around. I wait and pray. I don’t know what to do,

I set up inside where the visitors come an a flurry and leave in a hurry. I need to stop farting around and get on with it.

I go inside and ask head verger if he can spare someone to help with the filming. he says “Go and ask John the guy with the Sash, he’s not very busy this afternoon.”

John is a bloody nice bloke. He is willing both the film and be interviewed.

I speak to the camera and a Japanese woman and as many people as are passing on my right.

I forget what the name ‘Naomi’ means! BUNGLE!

The Message is over and its all recorded. I speak to John who says nice things. He is very kind. I interview him.

THE WORD LIVES HERE

I later find Joyce (The Spitting image of Miss Marples!) A wonderful lady who says this

For me, today, Salisbury is like a wet firework on a cold, wet and windy Bonfire night. I am done, The car really does need attending to and you know, its time to go. I love Salisbury and have been there many times with Bridget and have fond memories. Today was not one of them. The head verger, the deputy head guide, the good people of staff who allowed me to do this were all MAGNIFICENT. But something didn’t ‘click for me today’. It was a bit of a Conflux. Which of course is the name of the exhibition currently being held there. ‘Conflux: A Union of the Sacred and the Anonymous’ features over 20 sculptures of dramatically different scales by this innovative artist, positioned amongst and alongside the Cathedral’s earlier sculptures, in expected and unexpected places. The exhibition is a modern updating of the pre-Reformation tradition of displaying polychrome figures and is believed to be the biggest single collection of polychrome sculpture in the Cathedral since the Reformation.

I pack up and get on the road to Exeter. Its two hours away. I am way behind with the blog update and a thousand other things. I need to rest and I need to do some housekeeping. An hour into the wet journey to Exeter, I about to pass Mere, and spot a Bed & breakfast sign. Chetcombe house looks lovely, and for one night only, for a beautiful room, wife and a full English breakfast its £45.00. Rose says its the best she can do. I like it. I collapse on the bed.

In a few minutes the sun is out and its time to clean the car. 1 hour later its done.

I make a cup of tea and get myself some peanut butter crackers from my supplies. Call Bridget, tell he I love her and then settle down to type. All of a sudden it’s midnight. I am still not finished but i am collapsing.

The Videos are uploading and its time for me to sleep.

I don’t know if today has been profitable or not? As it been a hit or a miss. I think a miss. I don’t know. You can’t decide these things at midnight.

What will tomorrow bring?

  1. John Howarth says:

Dear Bob and Bridget, Facinating and frustrating and encouraging and discouraging – all in different amounts – to read what you are getting up to ! I have preached in the open air at all the places you have been to so far – though not outside St Paul’s. I went to Leicester Saquare for all but ten years as well as other places in London. I know how you feel about open air preaching – I could say more but will leave it until we hopefully – Deo Volente – to us latin scholars ! – meet up later in your tour. We have a guy in Canterbury who goes out for up to five hours and engages with young and old and foreigners for about five hours at a time! He is straight down the line and most effective. Good guy, you would like him ! Blessings and guidance and supply all in very large amounts, Yours, John, the hairy old paint brush !

PS No chemo therapy for Jean PTL !
